Arlington, Texas -- Super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez wins by TKO in the 8th round over Billy Joe Saunders in front of a record crowd at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday night. Alvarez wins the unification bout, and is ready to face super middleweight champion Caleb Plant next, according to sources. Alvarez goal is to clean the entire super middleweight division.
Alvarez (55-1-2, 38 KO's) was winning on all scorecards before the TKO win. Saunders (30-1, 14 KO's) eye was shut, he had no momentum in the fight. Alvarez landed a barrage of strikes to Saunders face and body during the bout. According to CompuBox punch stats, total punches landed for Alvarez was 73 to Saunders 60. Saunders did landed more jabs than Alvarez 30-15. Alvarez landed more viscious power punches 58-30 over Saunders.
According to reports, Saunders' corner was very concerned their fighter couldn't see, they wanted to throw in the towel. Before the 9th round, Saunders' trainer Mark TIbbs threw in the towel, Saunders suffered his first defeat.
According to reports, Saunders suffered an orbital bone fracture to his right eye. He was sent immediately to the hospital, after the fight.
